Indian EdTech has seen a rapid rise in the number of players and raised over $1 billion in funding in 2020!
The COVID-19 outbreak accelerated this trend. The crisis has been a watershed moment for India’s EdTech sector. Although a NASSCOM survey reveals that 40% of Indian startups have either temporarily halted operations or are on the verge of shutting down on account of the pandemic, the EdTech sector has beaten the odds and emerged stronger than ever before.
Startups including Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, Toppr, LEAD School, Classplus, and Apna alone have raised a cumulative of close to $1B. A report by RedSeer and Omidyar Network India reveals that India’s EdTech user base – both paid and free users – in K-12 and post K-12 segments has doubled from 45 million to 90 million during the pandemic.
The whole ecosystem of EdTech startups, VCs & investors, and accelerators is excited. But all in the sector question:
